Delusion of Continuity

The primary element that creates the delusion of continuity and stops you from experiencing eternity is your name.

This mechanism works as follows:

  • The Power of the Name: From the moment you learn language, you are taught a “most peculiar game” where you are given a name and told, “you are this”. This collection of sensations, feelings, and experiences is then associated with this single name, giving you a false idea of continuity.
  • The Delusion: Everything about you is constantly changing: your body completely changes (with every cell being replaced once in 7.5 years in Hindu tradition), your memories change (some fade, some are embellished, and some are fabricated), and your ideas about yourself change. Despite these constant changes, the name gives you a sense of perceived continuity.
  • The Mistaken Identity: Because you believe in this false continuity associated with your name, all the thoughts and internal monologue that goes on inside you are owned up to, leading you to execute them, sometimes even sacrificing your life. This process of owning up to the inner voice, which constantly upgrades your biography and tells you who you are, weaves a fictional character that you take as yourself—the ego personality.
  • The Consequence: This delusion of continuity stops you experiencing eternity. This temporary continuity that is perceived makes you forget the whole eternity that lies in front of you.

The separate self, or ego, is the source of all maya (illusion and delusion). It is not an entity but a process—something your organism is doing, which you believe your being is doing, but is not what your being truly is. While this separate self is a useful social convention (like money or the idea of time), the trouble begins when we mistake this convenience for the truth.

What stops us from experiencing eternity is the delusion of continuity, which is created and maintained primarily by the ego personality and the attachment to one’s name.

  • Consciousness and Matter: chit (consciousness) and jata (matter) are related, with DNA being the closest matter to consciousness.
  • The Coiled Connection: The chit (consciousness) and jata (DNA) are described as being coiled together.
  • The Binding Element: This coiled connection is tied together by the sounds we continuously generate. The words we listen to and cherish are considered so important because our DNA and consciousness are tied together with these sounds, which influences us.
